Who is this Mark and what Map is he on?
In March of 2008 I left my television job in New York City and moved to the Caribbean. Disillusioned with the life I was leading, I spent the next two years sniffing out my true passions. Late in 2009, I left my small tree house in St John, Virgin Islands, for the larger islands of New Zealand. It was then that MarkontheMap began.
I could never have imagined how successful the blog would become. It was always my dream to create a quality travel blog full of photos and stories with a unique perspective. I used the blog as an excuse to travel and as a way of forcing myself to write everyday and grow in my craft. Upon returning to New York City in May of 2011 I managed to parlay my three-plus years of world travel into a bona fide job in travel writing, becoming the travel editor of an international web-based newspaper, IBTimes. Now, in 2016, I am a full-time freelance travel writer. You can follow my professional career at www.markjohanson.com.
